Some of the FRN members had the opportunity to review products from the following stores:

ABC Neckties

Mommy Living the Life of Riley!: It was time to give it to my husband to see what he thought.  Immediately, he loved the design and was thrilled that he now had a new tie to wear around Halloween.  He thought that the Great Pumpkin scene was wonderful and would definitely get him noticed.  There are also so many different colors in this tie, that it would be very easy for him to match it to many of the dress shirts he already owns.

TechyDad: It arrived pretty quickly and I didn’t have to wait long before I wore it to work. I was impressed with both the speed of the delivery and the quality of the tie. I’d definitely order from them again (and, in fact, am deciding which tie to get next).

Mass Hole Mommy: I spent quite a while on ABC Neckties website searching for a tie that Chris would like and match a good portion of his dress shirts. I ended up going with the Lewis Fashion Silk Necktie and I’m so glad I did. This necktie looks fantastic on him. This picture doesn’t even come close to doing it justice. This Borcara label tie is made of 100% silk (dry clean only) and is very soft to the touch. I could tell what good quality this tie was as soon as I took it out of the package and I know it’s going to last for a very long time.

Sunglass Warehouse & Reading Glasses Shopper

icefairy’s Treasure Chest: Like all SW products, the lenses provide UV400 protection from dangerous ultra violet rays. You can tell from the picture above that they have a very cool design. I particularly love the sporty stripe that runs from the lenses down each temple. The shades provide a comfortable fit and do not leave any embarrassing pressure marks on my nose.  My old sunglasses got quite a few scratches on the lenses, blurring my vision. This pair is a prefect replacement that comes right in time!

Forgetfulone: I just got my new sunglasses, and they are CA-YOOT! I love them. I sometimes have a hard time finding the right pair for my face. What looks cute on other people doesn’t always look cute on me, but Sunglass Warehouse had so many to choose from (over 1,000 styles and colors), I was able to find just the right style. Plus they have personality! Hot pink personality!

Simply Cathi: I love my new reader sunglasses! While I’m out and about driving I can see the dash of my car without any difficulty. When I’m running around Disneyland I can read my map without squinting in the sunlight. When playing in the backyard with my grandchildren, I can clearly see their sweet faces when they ask for more ice cream. It really doesn’t get any better than this!

Brain Foggles: I chose a pair of rhinestone sunglasses, SW Rhinestone Style #1551. They are so stylish! Plus they provide UV400 protection. They have crystal clear gems and floral detailing.

The Mom Buzz: Their search options are absolutely amazing. For example, my dad requires sunglasses that fit over his glasses. Well, there is an option to search just those glasses at Sunglass Warehouse. And they have just launched pages to help you choose sunglasses based on your skin tones and choose glasses based your face shape! It’s so uber-helpful!

Mommy’s Memorandum: I was given the opportunity to transform frumpy into fabulous! I picked The Bella style. I love the deep purple and the floral print on the arms is dainty and definitely not something anyone would dare call “frumpy”. It was difficult to make a decision as Reading Glasses Shopper has a huge selection with a lot of fun colors and styles.

Maria’s Space: I don’t know that [the Rhinestone Sunglasses for Rock Stars] are really me but I have gotten loads of compliments on them. In fact, woman, kids, and men all seem to like them. While at a birthday party this weekend the guys were all trying them on. I think it was the pink.

Calgarydaddy.com: I was fortunate enough to received a pair of Aviator sunglasses that I just love!  The look and feel of these glasses is simply amazing and I actually look forward to putting them on.  I tend to always lose my glasses, but if this happens again, I now know that I can head over to http://www.sunglasswarehouse.com/ and find exact same pair!

Three Different Directions: These aren’t your average sunglasses they are a bit “bulkier” in shape, not in weight though, they are very lightweight. What makes them different from other sunglasses (well besides the fact that they fit over your regular glasses) is that they wrap around your eyes. For driving that’s a huge plus. When you’re looking using your side vision, that is shaded as well!

Socks4Life

A Mom’s Take: The men’s colors are great and having 4 in each color will make matching and sorting through socks much simpler over all to not have tons of mis-matched socks! We actually both went through our sock drawers and threw out a bunch of socks that were left with only one sock or those that had holes and it was so nice to have a fresh set of socks for both of us!

Shawn Ann’s World: The knee high socks fit pretty good, a little snug in the leg and a little big for my feet, but nothing major especially since I’ll be wearing boots with them.  However the Running Mate socks are too big for me.  When I put my feet in them there is about an inch to two inches of material left at the toes.  I can pull them to my toes and get them to look as though they fit (see pictures) however, once I go to put my shoes on the heels are above the back of my shoes. In all honesty, it’s what I expected.  That’s about how all socks fit me, so I’ve gotten used to it.  Other than that, the socks are great.

Sheltered Not Shattered: I really like my cozy socks. They are cushiony, soft and warm. I know it is summer time so warm isn’t a big issue right now but it is in the winter so I am really looking forward to having these in the months to come. They are also fun. My kids love me wearing them because I normally just wear white socks so these have become mom’s fun socks!

Real Mom Real Views: Socks4Life sent me several pairs of socks to review. The first pair I tried was the Excell Women’s Semi-Cushion socks. My feet were a little bit cold last week so I slipped them on in the morning. By noon I’m usually sock-free, but surprisingly I still had them on! So I wore them to the park with my sneakers. I was actually worried that my feet would be sweaty because of the cushioning, but they were just fine. I think I’ve found my new favorite athletic socks!

The Angel Forever: The pink heel and toe quarter socks really surprised me. They were extremely comfortable thanks to some cushioning in them. I wore a pair with sneakers to the fair on Saturday. We did a lot of walking while there and my feet never hurt. Usually, after a while with my traditional socks, they are rubbing wrong or tired. The cushion in the socks really gave my older sneakers new life.

Costume Supercenter

Recently, we posted a review of an online costume shop called Costume Discouters. Well, they’re also a part of another cool site called Costume Supercenter where you can find quality costumes at affordable prices for everyone in your family.

Here’s what our member’s had to say:

E=MC2: Since I don’t intend to make this [Princess Wildflower] an actual Halloween costume, and plan on adding it to the dress-up trunk, I checked out the stitching and durability pretty carefully. Although there are lots of raw edges throughout the costume, the stitching is strong and it should last my very active, very creative girls a nice, long time. That’s what we like in this household: durability!

All Because Two People Fell In LOVE: [My daughter] FINALLY picked the adorable Wonder Woman Costume! I was amazed at all of the extras that this costume came with! I usually send more on all of the extras that I spend on the costume alone! This Deluxe Wonder Woman costume included her red and blue dress with a gold vinyl belt, a separate cape, boot tops, a PVC headpiece, and a set of cuffs.

A Mom of 2 Dancers Reviews: Once I had my selection,  I was shipped the costume speedy quick.  I was surprised at how fast it arrived.  It was sent just like how you buy them in the store, in the plastic hanging bag.  It was shipped in a tyvek envelope.  These are the best thing for shipping clothes in, they do not get wet and they are really hard to tear open. The costume is a great quality, that will last for years. Customer service is excellant.  Plus the huge selection and great pricing is hard to beat.  On top of that, they offer free returns and exchanges.  You can’t fail when buying from Costume Supercenter.

A Nut in a Nutshell: The costume fits in a flattering way without being too clingy or too short, which I was initially worried about because I like to be more modest on Halloween than many other young ladies. As far as sizing, I ordered one size up from what the size chart recommended. I wear a 2 or 3, which translates to an XS on their charts, but I ordered a small. The dress has an interesting boat neck/cowl collar and some gold detailing at the sleeves to make it more special. Although the fabric is definitely man-made, it’s not see-through, so I don’t have to worry about fussing with special undergarments.

Mommy’s Free Time: First, I loved the material the [Super Girl] costume was made of. It can be cold in late October and I loved that this costume was long sleeved and looked like it would keep you warm but not hot. Second, the boot covers were awesome. I remember last year I had the worse time finding shoes to match with my daughter’s outfit. These covers simply fit over your shoes.

Confessions of an Overworked Mom: This year I totally fell in love with this Asian Princess Costume.  Isn’t it gorgeous?  I cannot tell you how impressed I am with the quality of this costume.  The kimono costume includes the dress in a beautiful butterfly print, the pink obi (belt) and the pretty flower headpiece.  It’s available in sizes toddler, small and medium.  It’s made of polyester and looks so cute and authentic!  At $24.99 it’s very affordable and can be used both for Halloween or for dress up play. It would work wonderfully as a homeschool aid when you study Asian culture.

Cool Baby Kid: We tried out the Pink Punk Pirate Toddler costume after deciding on a pirate theme for the family.  More recently I purchased a 2nd pirate costume, this one for our toddler boy, and choose Costume Supercenter for the purchase for a few reasons:
Competitive Price and Sale! (Currently 15% off a $25 purcahse), Huge Selection, Free Shipping on Product Exchanges, Free Size Exchanges, Free Replacement on Shipping Errors/Damaged Goods, & Lots of shipping options including same day shipping.

Leslie’s Life: I have a lot of good things to say about this costume: It’s flippin’ adorable!!, it’s very light weight and breathable, which is perfect for layering clothes underneath dependent on the weather, it makes Haylee look JUST like Jesse with amazing details all the way down to Jesse’s hairbow, and the best of all, Haylee loves it! My only negative is, we had one heck of a time getting it off of her wrists. The holes for her hands are WAY too small and I have a feeling I’ll end up having to make some cuts in it for Halloween.

Tethered Mommy: [Our monkey] costume is made of a soft brown material.  It is almost like microsuede – really that soft.  I also love that this is not too heavy of a material as Halloween can go in direction weather-wise around here.  It’s lighter-weight but not too much so.  It’s also very well constructed – this costume could definitely hold up to many instances of dress up.

The B That Keeps Us Honest: Over all the quality of the costume is what I would expect, not something he would wear all the time but is built sturdy enough to withstand an active toddler. It should also be noted that the costume in the package differs slightly from the image on the package and on the website. Honestly, I like what is in the package better, it’s suited better for a toddler and actually looks to be a better quality than the image. Finally, the costume, with the except of the glasses, runs a little small so if you aren’t sure what size to get go one size bigger. Jude just turned 2 years old and it fits him perfectly.

My Teenage Werewolf

My Teenage Werewolf will find a captive audience in mothers of daughters and daughters of mothers. It is the craftily-written story of Lauren Kessler’s quest to understand her mercurial daughter Lizzie as she comes up on her thirteenth birthday. At first Lauren sits down with all the best Amazon.com-ranked parenting books but soon finds that reading is not enough. She needs empirical evidence. She needs to experience Lizzie’s life. She needs to follow her—everywhere.

With Lizzie’s approval—which is often as shocking as what follows—Lauren sits in on her daughter’s classes, observes her in gym, watches her practice with the school band, attends track practice, even participates in a wrestling match, and ventures online into the world of teen chat rooms. What the experiment produces is not only an intimate scrutiny of a pre-teen but an open, honest process of introspection.

FRN had the opportunity to review this book for themselves and here’s what they had to say:

Ciara’s Ramblings and Whatnot: As a mom to a tween and a teen girl, it’s often a daily challenge with them. They’ve pushed my buttons, told me they hate me, say I’m embarrassing, talk back, and refuse to do what they’re told when it comes to doing things around the house. I start to think to myself, “Am I the only one who is having a tough time trying to understand their daughter(s)?” In the book, My Teenage Were-Wolf, author Lauren Kessler, shows me that I am not alone.

Maria’s Space: I want to run out and buy this book for all my girlfriend’s with daughters. It is not preachy. Is filled with humor and I loved reading Lizzie’s comments to her mom. Through their headbutting you can see a deep, deep love between mother and daughter and that was my favorite part of the book. As the mom of an already spirited 5 year old, I already know that I have to love her for the spirit in her and that I will undoubtedly have many, many moments where I feel like Lauren. However, the one thing I have that Lauren didn’t have is her book to help me tread through the waters of preteen angst. God help me!

Mom of 2 Dancers: Kessler writes in a very light and witty style while tackling a serious subject matter. If you have a daughter, this is a must read book.  It made me feel that I wasn’t alone.  I will be honest, things have been super tough with my 12 year old.  This book really helped me a lot.  The tween and teenage years are so hard on everyone, any help is much appreciated to all involved! Being a daughter myself, I also enjoyed the book from that end.  Honestly, I think most women will enjoy this book regardless of if you have your own daughter.  It is just a great read that really makes you look inside yourself.

Sweepstakes & Contest List Directory: After just reading the first chapter I knew that I had found someone who completely understood what I was going through as a parent with a teenage daughter.  A few times I reached for a tissue because I felt the same hurt Lauren had.  I think the book helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel if I learned to listen and accepted more from what my daughter was feeling during her awkward moments.  I recommend this book for any mother with a teenage daughter; it’ll help from the first page just knowing that you’re not alone.

You may purchase your copy of My Teenage Werewolf at Amazon.com for $17.13.

OUR REVIEW

Some very lucky FRN members had the opportunity to review a costume of their choice from Costume Discounters. Here’s what they had to say:

Faithfully Frugal and Free: The quality of this dress really shocked me! Usually toddler costumes can look so cheap, but this looks just like the real deal! My two favorite things about this costume are; the wings (they are ultra soft, not hard and stiff like most wings), and the neck detail! It adds so much to the overall look of the dress! We could not be happier with this dress!

Misadventures in Baby Raising: If you know me IRL then chances are you know that I normally prefer homemade costumes to store bought, BUT Costume Discounters and my sons adorable Woody costume made my change the way I think about that! The Toy Story 3 Woody costume has got to be the cutest costume that I have ever seen, from the boots and gun holster to the most adorable cowboy hat ever! I was actually surprised by the quality of the fabric, it’s soft and not at all itchy and uncomfortable (like most seem to be) and it is incredibly durable.

Mommy Living the Life of Riley!: Our Deluxe Plush Elmo Costume from Costume Discounters was really well-made and of a very high quality. The short red fur looked very believable and there were no rips or tears in her costume. All of the seams were sewn securely and nothing appeared like it would begin falling apart once the costume was worn. I especially liked how heavy duty the zipper on the front of the costume was.

Thanks, Mail Carrier: Already a big fan of Clifford, she was more than excited to step right in to this plush outfit and take on being such a fun character. I was happy to see that the fabric was extremely soft and durable (and washable!) and the addition of the padded head and front paws made this much better quality than I have seen in the past.

The Mom Buzz: I have to say… I really like [my Jedi costume]. It’s a simple, brown, long, thin robe. I think the Jedis would approve. I wouldn’t want anything heavier for everyday play or a warm Halloween. I think Costume Discounters goes above and beyond to make sure you are happy with your purchase! Plus their selection is unbeatable for Halloween or just imaginative play clothes.

Night Owl Mama: The plastic is not cheap and it feels really sturdy not at all like the cheap plastic like when we were kids, or as my 4 yr old would say ” This is COOL, just like the racers use mom!” It only took him a brief 20 sec to get fully unclothed to try on the costume when I pulled it out of the bag. I swear I never saw him get undressed so fast. I was a little worried that the costume didn’t have a large enough area for him to step into but it was quickly proven wrong. Not only does it stretch but there was room to grow too. I’m very impressed with the costume quality.

Rockin’ Mama: Can I let you in on a little secret?  I had to put the costume away because my son wants to dress up as Buzz for school…and the grocery store…and at bedtime.  The costume is adorable and includes a jumpsuit with attached chest piece, hood, and shin guards.  It is made from 100% polyester, which means that it will keep kids warm during the fall.  I like the fact that it’s lightweight, since many costumes are bulky and uncomfortable.  The costume is an authentic Disney costume.  My son completed the look with his Talking Woody Doll.

A Frugal Friend: My 3-year old is always in the 90th percentile in height and we ordered a small, which fits sizes 4-6. It fits perfectly. It’s made of a heavier fleece type material which will be wonderful if it’s cold outside (I’m praying for Texas to actually have an autumn this year instead of skipping from summer to winter)! The quality – I have to give the costume a thumbs up as this is the best costume I’ve ordered so far for my daughter. It’s the best made, with secure buttons and all. No shortcuts here and no flimsy material either. I’m quite impressed.

So stop by Costume Discounters for all your costume needs. They have the widest selection at affordable prices.

Ghost in the Graveyard

Did you know?

  • Since 1980, the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for children ages 2 – 5 and more than tripled for children ages 6 – 11.
  • Between 1981 and 1997, free playtime among 6 to 8 year olds dropped 25% and homework more than doubled.
  • Since 2005, the amount of time children and teens ages 8 -18 spend watching TV, playing video games, or surfing the internet increased from 1 hour, 15 minutes per day to more than 7 and a half hours per day. (That’s more than 53 hours a week and more than most adults spend on their full-time job!)
  • An increased focus on standardized testing has resulted in the reduction or elimination of recess in about 40% of American elementary schools, and in some districts, schools are being built without playgrounds.

What’s a parent, health professional, or child to do?

  • Marlene Byrne, an award-winning children’s author and advocate of unstructured playtime, has come to the rescue with PROJECT PLAY—a movement to get kids away from their televisions and into the backyard for exercise, creativity and old-fashioned fun.
  • With more than 20 years of experience as an advertising agency owner, spokesperson, and writer, Byrne is using her creative talent to inspire today’s overscheduled, electronic-focused, and dangerously overweight generation of children to get active. Through children’s books, community activities, and school curriculum, Byrne is bringing back the nostalgic memories of her youth and teaching children backyard games like pick up baseball, kick the can, and ghost in the graveyard.

As the founder and author of Project Play, Byrne is not the first to call for more unstructured playtime among children. But while there are countless initiatives to increase children’s activity levels, few of them aim directly at the children.

Some of our FRN members had the opportunity to review Ghost in the Graveyard ($9.99). Here’s what they had to say:

Mama’s Money Savers: After reading this book, I want to go out and play Ghost in the Graveyard!  It is such a cute book with tons of great colorful pictures.  Since it is a chapter book it is geared towards kids around 9 years old, but I can see reading this to my boys in a few years.  The chapters are short and the font is big so it really is a quick read, even though it is 55 pages.  I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for inspiration for your kids to get out and play and read a book!  I am sure the other books in the series are just as fun and creative as this one!

Mom of 2 Dancers Reviews: I gave this book to my daughter to read and she flew through it.  She really enjoyed the story and wants to play the game included in the book.  She also wants to read the previous stories especially Treasure Hunt!

Simply Stacie: The kids and I immediately settled in to read the latest edition in the Project Play book series. My young children sat captivated as I read about Sam and his friends “spook-tacular” adventures on Halloween night. My children immediately wanted to start playing and it was so easy to explain how to play as the rules are included in the book. My husband and I and even the family dog joined the kids in our own version of “Ghost in the Graveyard”. I have to admit it was a blast and the kids have asked to play again and again.

Sweeps4Bloggers: The book includes very clear instructions for playing the game. It can be played with 3 or more players and can work well for a large group. Depending on the safety of your neighborhood and the ages of the participants, you can set up easy boundaries (a backyard or playground) or it can be a larger area. It can be played during the day, but nighttime gives it some added spooky fun. Or it can be modified a bit and played indoors.

Monkey Monkey Music

NYC-based singer/songwriter Meredith LeVande could truly be termed a “Renaissance woman of children’s music.”  Meredith not only holds undergraduate degrees in Women’s Studies and English, she also has a master’s degree in music and a law degree!  Drawing from all these disciplines for her multi-faceted work with children, Meredith heads up a project with the marvelously mischievous moniker Monkey Monkey Music, with a focus on “putting the child back into children’s music.”

Five years ago Meredith’s debut album, Monkey Monkey Music with Meredith LeVande, became an instant hit with families nationwide, was a Parenting magazine “Pick,” and was in rotation on Sirius Satellite Radio, earning a grassroots reputation as a classic children’s recording. Meredith LeVande has, since 2005, devoted herself to performing for children in intimate settings, becoming a favorite among NYC area families and creating a repertoire that has grown organically due to her one-on-one interactions with children of virtually every culture imaginable.

With the new Monkey Monkey Music CD, What Are the Odds?, Meredith has created something remarkable, finding the middle road between baby songs and pop band songs where kids’ lyrics are simply added to music that would otherwise be played for adults.  Meredith’s music is not only child-friendly, it’s truly child appropriate, developed with the healthy growth of the young child in mind.

What Are the Odds? will be released on August 31, however, some very lucky FRN members had the opportunity to review an advance copy of this CD. Here’s what they had to say:

ArmyMom’s Place: It was a refreshing change of pace listening to these songs. Some of which were good ol’ classics, done up in a new way! I can promise that you have NEVER heard any version of “Wheels on the Bus” with this much energy! “Wheels” will have you wanting to listen over and over!

Meandering Matt: My son loves listening to CDs at bedtime, so I thought this would be a great opportunity. As soon as it arrived, I offered to let him listen to it. The next night, I mentioned needing it back in order to review it. He threw a fit. He didn’t want me to take it away. This told me right away that it was a catchy album.

Mommy’s Free Time: I must say that this is a really cute CD. I didn’t really pick up the pop songs that were used but I still liked the words to each tune. And the kids loved it! It’s our new car CD! This is a fun CD that would be perfect for daycares, homeschooling or just for fun at home with your kids! It’s family friendly and I would recommend it to any of my friends with young kids!

My Real Review: There is a depth to LeVande’s music that makes it stand out from other children’s albums. She naturally incorporates complex musical structures (that go far beyond my musical background) and academic concepts that explore the interrelationship between mathematics, philosophy, and music. Monkey Monkey Music is child-friendly and reflects LeVande’s passion for nurturing healthy childhood development.

Not Just Baby Brain: This CD is in constant rotation at our house now and it’s not annoying at all!  My daughter dances around the house to it and it’s great for the car because it’s kid-friendly but still sounds like something we’d listen to on the radio.  My husband even commented yesterday that if you weren’t paying attention to the words, you’d never know it was children’s music we were listening to, which is high praise from him!

Simply Cathi: Monkey Monkey Music is fun and educational with a beat that gets everyone up singing and dancing. Children love music and it didn’t take long for my grand daughter to sing along with Meredith.
It doesn’t matter if you’re young in years or just in your heart, Monkey Monkey Music brings out the monkey in all of us.

This Mama Loves Her Bargains: Meredith LeVande is a New York City resident who, in my opinion, is going places.  I love her sound.  I love her music.  My kids love her music.  Not only does she sound good, but her songs are educational.  One of the first things Busy B said to me when I was getting ready to put songs on her mp3 player was to ask me to include the new Monkey CD with the tree on it!!

Two Monkey’s and a Washtub: What Are The Odds, her 2nd CD release, definitely has songs that are not only fun, but include lyrics that teach kids with every song! Okay, so what do I mean by that? Take the title song, What are the Odds?, this song teaches odd numbers, days of the week, the planets, and objects within a single song. The music is very upbeat and kept my kids dancing and engaged throughout the entire CD.

Curious George 2 Soundtrack

So many of us are familiar with the adorable monkey, Curious George.  We were excited to see “Curious George 2″ on DVD and while we were waiting, we had the opportunity to review the “Curious George 2 Soundtrack.”  The Soundtrack had a lot of fun songs on it and we were excited to review it here on Family Review Network.  Songs included favorites such as “Life Less Ordinary,” “California Sun,” “Let Your Troubles Roll By,” and more.  The album features Brian Wilson, Carbon Leaf, and Jackie Greene.  You can purchase the “Curious George 2″ Soundtrack online and in stores for the retail price of $13.98.

Here’s what our reviewers had to say about the “Curious George 2″ Soundtrack:

All Because Two People Fell in Love – Ella loves her CD, she has listened to it over and over! I love that the songs all sound different, not the same sounds over and over! Each song has a catchy tune and Ella has quickly picked up the words to these fun songs! Her favorite is “On a Roll!”
The Angel Forever – The minute the boys saw the CD with Curious George on it, they demanded to listen to it. We put it on and, within seconds, both of the boys were dancing away.
Army Mom’s Place – This is such a fun packed CD. Full of varying styles of music! It’s sure to make you feel like you are at the beach, on exploration in the jungle, or even like you are taking a stroll on a beautiful spring day.
Perfect for any age! All my kids have enjoyed this CD.
Badger Momma – I found the CD to be quite enjoyable. The songs are mostly all upbeat and also while family-friendly are not specifically geared towards the musical ear of children.
Brain Foggles – My favorite song is California Sun, performed by Brian Wilson. It has the old Beach Boy sound and it’s a lot of fun to listen to. I’ve never heard of Carbon Leaf before listening to this CD, but I’m a new fan. Their songs have a bluegrassy, soft rock feeling to them. My favorite is Follow That Monkey. The songs by Heitor Pereira are instrumental and are nice for quiet times.
A Couch With A View – I have to say how impressed that I was! I love music that I can enjoy right along side of the kids, and dance right along with them too!!
Happy Healthy Families – All great songs that my boys now sing around the house and in the car. We are keeping our CD in our car, and I am pretty sure that they will know all the words to each song in no time flat!!
Lisa Reviews – This is definitely a soundtrack that your kids will get up and dance too (well, mine did).
The Mommy-Files -  It’s a fun CD that both my kids and I like listening to!  My 2 favorite songs were “Life Less Ordinary,” “California Sun,” and “Let Your Troubles.”  I found myself bopping and swaying to them while we were driving and listening to the cd.  The CD is fun!
Mommy Reviewed - My kid and I had fun dancing (think jumping, squealing, wriggling which passes for dancing where my kid and I confess, I are concerned :) to the tunes which are lively and fun. They certainly evoke the images of Curious George and his mischievous adventures.
Momstart – With all things Curious George, we loved it. Curious George reminds me of my son, he’s always getting into something but can get out of trouble just by smiling and saying I’m sorry, well my son has the added effect of batting his eyes at you. The cuteness just melts your heart.
Nerd Family Things – Well, this Curious George CD is a little different. The music is a little more mature than you might expect. The music is still fun but not as bubbly as many silly kids cds. My kids all like the CD but didn’t think it was as Curious Georgey as the other CD but really good (their words;).
Rockin Mama – The soundtrack is actually not geared as much towards children as it is towards adults (in my opinion). Many of the songs would only be recognizable by adults. Several of the songs consist solely of music (without words) and I actually prefer those.
Sage and Savvy – I really enjoyed listening to the Curious George 2 Soundtrack–it was full of a lot of great songs, several of which are by a band that I’ve never heard of before
A Wrestling Addicted Mommy – For kids the songs are catchy and fun.

Reviewers of Family Review Network were provided copies of the “Curious George 2″ Soundtrack by 429 Records to facilitate their reviews.  All opinions expressed are 100% their own.

National Geographic Kids: Weird But True

Children are very inquisitive.  And as a parent, I’m constantly looking for innovative ways to foster my own children’s learning, creativity, and curiosity.  National Geographic, one of the largest non-profit scientific and educational institutions in the world, offers an entire kid’s site and section featuring books and activities designed to inspire and educate children. Several of our reviewers had an opportunity to check out Weird But True.  Here is a bit more information about the book from the site:

Weird But True is based on the hugely popular magazine page of quirky, fun facts that many readers of National Geographic Kids magazine turn to first.  All of the facts in this handy book will amaze friends and family: Animals Superpowers, Chills and Thrills, Eat or Be Eaten, Mini and Mega, Wild and Crazy, and much, much more.  Wacky facts, fascinating information, and lively art combine in this easy-to-browse, casual reference book that is sure to give young readers hours of fun.

So what did our reviewers think?

All Because Two People Fell In Love:  All of the facts in this handy book just totally amaze my kids and they can’t wait to share these facts with friends and family! I appreciate the adjacent pages for each fact that presents a one-paragraph explanation of how that fact is possible or why it is so. I also like how these wacky facts, fascinating information, and lively art are combined into an easy-to-browse, reference book for my little ones.

An Island Life:  The best part is that this book shared the information with just a basic phrase. If my kids wanted to know more about the subject, they had to look it up themselves in the encyclopedia or internet. And believe me, their curiosity just had to know more.  All in all, we found this book to be interesting, educational and fun!

Army Mom’s Place:  I love how this book has been able to get my kiddos thinking! It’s a book that they all enjoy. Finding a book that is able to meet the interests of a wide age range is always great!

A Nut in a Nutshell:  I’m all about quirky. And this book is full of it!  You won’t be able to stop turning the pages to see what’s next!

Maria’s Space:  The book is small enough for little hands.  The pictures are full color.  The information is fun, educational, interesting and some of it is just plain weird. (Pun on the Title!).  There are 300 facts in this 206 page book and at the end you are wishing and praying for book 2 to come out soon.

Mommy Reviewed:  An amazing, amazing and FUN book for all ages! So far me, my husband, and my father-in-law have been through it and we all loved it. It’s made for fascinating dinner table conversation. I can’t wait to read this thought-provocative book with my kids when they’re a little older and better able to understand it.

Moody Mama Says:  This is such a fun book! My boys have requested that I read it to them over and over. Some of the facts are just plain funny!

Rockin’ Mama:  I think it is a fun, creative way to get children excited and interested in the subject matter.  It opens the door for discussion and expansion on topics brought up in the book. The pictures are colorful and kid-friendly.

The Angel Forever:  Both of the boys are fascinated with the photos within Weird But True. Yes, even my 2 year old will sit with the book for an extended time looking at all of the photos. JSL will chat away and call out all of the items that he recognizes. NHL, in first grade, will read the facts to me and then talk with me about what it says. Our conversations actually made me think about ways to use this book in the classroom. (I am always a teacher, even when on hiatus.) I could see the fun facts in this book being used as a prompt for classroom discussion and/or a writing exercise. In addition to this, the facts could easily create interest in a subject for kids to do more research on.

The Clan McLeod:  Some of the facts presented in National Geographic Kids: Weird But True, left me saying, “No way!” I got my hands on it before the girls and after seeing and hearing my reactions, they couldn’t wait to read it for themselves.  Weird But True is a small, softcover book with 208 pages of wacky facts that will get your kids giggling and gasping and having fun. It’s brightly colored pages and fantastic graphics really add to the value of the book.

The Mommy-Files: I really enjoyed this little book and loved the fun facts presented in it.  I also loved the pictures throughout it, as did my kids.  There are so many fun facts in here.  I think I may have enjoyed it more than my kids!

Weird But True retails for $6.95 and is available at the National Geographic Store.

Made Here, Baby!

With Christmas shopping season coming up, wouldn’t it be nice to have a guide that could tell you which products would make safe, sturdy, and reliable gifts for your children? Would you love to support the U.S. economy by purchasing products that are made in America? If your answer is yes to either (or both) of these questions, you should definitely read Made Here, Baby! by Bruch H. Wolk.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

After all the recalls of Chinese-imported toys containing dangerous chemicals, parents want to know where to get products they know will be safe because they have American manufacturing standards. Plus, in the current recession more and more people are looking to support their local businesses.

Author, product developer, and proud uncle and godfather Bruce Wolk tracked down over 400 U.S. companies that produce amazing children’s products from infant moccasins from Minnesota to cribs handmade in Memphis, sustainably-built wooden sleds from Colorado to Cotton Monster’s unique plush animals in Seattle. In addition to basic company information and interesting facts, he includes notes on eco-friendly companies, family businesses, and ones that make products for children with special needs, so every parent is sure to find a product that meets their home’s needs.

BOOK REVIEWS

Several members of Family Review Network had the opportunity to read Made Here, Baby for themselves. Here’s what they had to say:

Mama Sparkles: I loved how each listing included an interesting fact about the company, such as how it started, their philosophy, or a story about the owner. These facts were interesting to read and made each company personable. In addition, each section includes an entertaining introduction in the form of an enlightening interview or personal anecdote.

A Couch with a ViewI’m sorry, but the cheap, crappy, mass manufactured trinkets just aren’t cutting it for me anymore and Made Here, Baby is pushing me in the right direction to find quality items for my monsters. This is one of those books that rank up there next to the What To Expect books for every expectant mother.

All Because Two People Fell in Love: This is a well-organized resource for anyone shopping for the little ones in their life!! It is organized by states so it makes it simple to find stores close to you! It’s very helpful and timely resource for us busy parents. It lists over 400 companies that uses only materials sourced in the USA in their products. I found it very interesting to read the sections about how the companies were started and why the founders started their companies. We highly recommend this great book as a resource for finding high quality, locally made toys and products that will keep your kids happy and healthy!

Sage and Savvy: What’s really great about this book is how you can search for companies based on various criteria, such as by the type of product they manufacture, by state, those who are eco-friendly, woman-owned, and more.

3 Garnets & 2 Sapphires: I really like that the book includes both large and small companies. I think it is very important to point out that many of the businesses that produce safe wooden and fabric children’s

products are small mom and dad businesses. They really should be commended and deserve our business.

She Scribes: I also really like that there are web sites listed so you are able to check out each company online too. I think I have about a dozen sites bookmarked thanks to this MUST HAVE book for all parents, grandparents or anyone who cares for children. It’s a great resource to have an a “go to guide” the next time you want to make a purchase.

My Sentiment ExactLee: Made Here Baby is a book that will always be in arms reach in our home. I found it to be essential to helping our economy in a difficult time. Wolk makes it easy for parents to find quality, safe products for our children that are made here in the USA.

Brimful Curiosities: I noticed several familiar companies mentioned in the book including Louisville Slugger, Step2, K’nex, Big Wheel, and Britax USA. We own a Britax carseat, and I didn’t realize it was American-made until reading Made Here, Baby! I happily found a few companies I’ve mentioned on my blog listed in the book as well: Lindenwood, Inc (maker of Uncle Goose blocks) and Northstar Toys. I highly recommended this resource for finding American-made children’s products.

Homeschooling and Loving It: We have had so many recalls and dangerous things out there being sold, it truly can be scary!  This book wants to tell you about companies that are known to be safe and well-made.  The book also contains companies that are family run, companies that are owned by women and moms and companies that care about the enviroment!

The Way I See it Too: I rarely purchase a product before I research it. It’s important for us to know how Consumer Reports and J D Powers rate the product and more importantly what other consumers have to say. For these reasons, Made Here Baby is the perfect book for us and if you feel at all as we do about your purchases, I’d wager you will like this book too.

Chocolate Fingerprints: This book would be a fantastic baby shower gift, or a gift for parents or grandparents of young children; basically anyone who has the desire to buy high-quality, American made products for babies and children.
